Two illustrated works preserved at Nagoya University — the Kinka Zufu from the late Edo period (by Keisuke Ito / Nagoya University Library) and the Chūgyo Zufu from the Meiji to Taisho eras (by Genichiro Narazaka / Nagoya University Museum). Both works depict fish, insects, and invertebrates with astonishing precision, conveying the keen eyes of observation and the depth of understanding of nature at the time to the present day. To draw is to truly see in detail, to name, and to communicate.
As part of the public program of the 96th Annual Meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan (Nagoya), a historical materials exhibition was held under the theme "Peering into Modern Zoology through the Collections of Nagoya University: Life Depicted — The Natural History Lineage Bridged by the Kinka Zufu and Chūgyo Zufu" (date: September 6, 2025). From this exhibition, we have compiled a list of the contents featured on this website.
